Search Engine optimization
On-page SEO
As a first step, look at your on-page SEO. Here’s a few steps you can follow:
- Review your title, meta description, headings (h1 to h6), images alt text and overall content. Are all your keywords optimized?
- Repeat that step for every page starting with your homepage.
- Make sure your site is responsive/mobile. If your site has some issues, Google will penalize you because of a poor user experience.
Local SEO
If you are a local business, don’t forget about the local elements on your page. Do you have a Google My Business listing? Is the category accurate? Do you have any reviews? Are they positive? Did you post photos? videos?
Content
The most important of all is probably the content. Is your content accurate? Is your message clear? Is your target audience clearly identity? Do you have a blog? If you answered all these questions, you’re probably good. If not, go back to the drawing board. If one or the other is missing, consider adding it.
Backlinks
Backlinks are links from outside domains that point to pages on your domain; essentially linking back from their domain to yours. Backlinks are important for Search Engines and users because it provides a way for people to find other sources of information on the same or related topics. For Search Engines, backlinks help to determine the page’s importance and value. Be careful though, this is not about quantity anymore but quality. You can check your backlinks on smallseotools.com.
Your competition
It’s not as important as on-page SEO, content or backlinks but checking who you are competing with online is very important. When you do a search for your related keywords, the top results should tell you who your competition is. Look at what they are doing. You might learn a lot.
Social signals
Social media activity and other user engagement are taken into consideration as part of Google ranking algorithms. You don’t specifically need to be on every social media platform, but may be you should be where your audience is. Check:
- Your branding
- Your activity
- Your engagement
- Are you using the relevant channels?
- Do you have links to your social media on your website?
Your Reputation
Nowadays, managing your reputation online is very important. It’s very easy to ruin a business by ignoring what people are saying about you and even worse to ignore it. Do a search for your business. Do you have any reviews on Google, Yelp or any other platform? If they are positive, it’s great. If not, try to fix it. Or try to learn from it…at least.
Go through that list every couple of months and check where you stand. It’s constantly moving, so something that was relevant or accurate a few months ago, might not be today.
